Yes, indeed… at the end of the day, a lot of Kate Moss photos and videos, and a lot of fashion in general, is/are.
Nonetheless, this video features one of the most iconic (top) models ever, and Nick Knight, who’s well on his way to become an icon of fashion photography (and is doing lots of interesting experiments in fashion video). Keep in mind this video is also the interpretation of Jamie Harley, who edited the piece focusing on repetition, which greatly contributes to this voyeuristic feeling.
It will undoubtedly interesting to see the other iterations of the ‘Editing Kate’ project and see how the original footage can be re-shuffled to create a different film.
Quoting from ShowStudio’s website:
“Kate Moss is undoubtedly one of the world’s most photographed women – and in our latest fashion film series, we invite a selection of contemporary video editors to craft their own fashion film from footage captured of Kate Moss during Nick Knight’s editorial for the December 2010 issue of Vogue Italia. The resulting fashion films will be released over spring 2011, alongside interviews with each of the editors to underline their individual approach to the footage, the process of editing Kate, and the emerging genre of fashion film.”
Just some food for thought, I guess.

Despite all the analyzing, interpreting, and reading one can do. As well as whatever background information there might be, the video is what the video is (showing). And I fail to see the aesthetic appeal in both imagery and content in this particular video…

Point taken, John. And I know many people will share your opinion. I’m not sure where I stand regarding this video either…
All I’m saying is that there might be something interesting about this video, in the same way that, although they are arguably gratuitously raunchy, the American Apparel print ads are worth thinking about, right? I’m not sure exactly why, but they say something about our society, I think.
With Faskino, a large part of what I’m doing is to try to give a broad view of what the fashion video (sub)genre is. I don’t love every single piece of video I put up, but I think it’s important that I show these things, if only to fuel the discussion that we’re having. I don’t work directly in or for the fashion industry, but I’m not too far from it either, so I like to think about these things, I guess.
I hope you accept this answer for what it is: I have no interest in ‘defending’ Nick Knight or Kate Moss, I just think that it’s a noteworthy collaboration.
